I graduated college in May of 2006, and I started to work at my family’s business. After that, I became an elementary school teacher where I relied on quick and convenient meals: aka fast food. I was eating the unhealthy foot-long subs, greasy burgers and calorie-heavy burritos. It didn’t take long for my fit, college body to turn into something I didn’t recognize or respect. I thought to myself, “Who am I becoming?”
Almost three years later, because sometimes it takes a while for that ah-ha moment to strike you, I was visiting my dad when a P90x infomercial came on TV. It immediately struck a cord in me, and I began to research it online. All of the real people with their passion and dedication opened my eyes. They were once just like me, not happy with their body weight and unsatisfied with their life’s direction. I was inspired.
When I got home, I started my transformation by deciding to order P90x. I had made a commitment to myself and I wasn’t going to get in my own way. The first few weeks of the workout were incredibly hard. Even though the diet was a huge change, I was surprised that the food was so filling and flavorful. My wedding was a few months away and I was motivated to look my best in front of all of those people. Wedding pictures last forever, and I didn’t want to cringe when I looked at mine. I wanted to be proud.
I stuck to my commitment months after the wedding. I was a machine, but after a while, I broke down. I stopped exercising and started ordering pizzas. My old routine was coming back (online video games all the time) and by the time I realized what was happening, I had gained it all back. This was the same time that my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her health was deteriorating, and I realized that there were things I could be doing to become healthier and less likely to get a serious illness. She was fighting so hard, and I felt like I was wasting my health.
It was very important for me to have a coach. I needed someone to keep tabs on me and to motivate me. The coach emailed me every week and it served as a constant reminder that someone was waiting for my results. Someone was holding me accountable to keep my commitment and that made all of the difference.
I went back to the diet and started working out. I took it to the next level. I became more serious than the first time about everything from finding my target heart rate to what I ate and drank. P90x wasn’t just a 90-day goal anymore, it became a lifestyle choice. A mission to stay healthy and fit for the rest of my life. Health and fitness became my passion, so it only made sense that I started drinking Shakeology. It was easier to have a shake at work then to cook a meal, and even quicker than driving for fast food. Everything fell into place.
I am still doing P90x and I don’t plan on stopping. I do doubles, stick with the diet, and right now I am the strongest and healthiest that I’ve ever been. This changed my life, and being a teacher, I became driven to help others find their strength to longer and healthier lives. Like my coach helped me succeed. And now that my mom is in remission, I am her coach.
This isn’t just an exercise, this is a new life-style. Your commitment will change you physically and mentally. Your confidence and happiness is worth the sweat.
